Most outrageous and unique baby names of 2021 revealed by McCrindle Research

With 2021 coming to a close, the most popular baby names have been revealed.

And this year the names Oliver and Charlotte top the list again.

However, according to research and communication specialists McCrindle, Millennials are seeking individuality when selecting their newborn’s name.

“Millennial parents also grew up with a lot of Sarahs and Matthews in their school classrooms,” Social Researcher Ashley Fell says – explaining why many parents steer clear of those “top spot” names.

And the numbers show the trend – with Sarah dropping 69 places and Matthew dropping 52, while Claire, Maddison, Luke and Dylan are also proving less popular with the next-gen parents.

It appears Australian parents have been showing a lot of national pride when naming their kids in 2021, with Matilda and Jack sitting comfortably in the top 10 most popular baby names.

The Royals, or rather the royal babies, are still influencing parents with Louis and Archie still a popular choice.

For baby girls there is a strong trend towards colours and botanical names with Violet, Poppy and Delilah climbing the ranks.

In the world of baby boys, the trend is short and snappy with the likes of Leo and Noah and Henry sitting comfortably in the top 10.

“Millennial parents are choosing more diverse (and relaxed!) names for their children, which is quite appropriate as their Generation Alpha children will be growing up in more diverse classrooms, communities and workplaces in the future,” Ashley adds.

McCrindle also reveals the continued trend of nicknames: “Rose to Rosie, Savannah to Sadie, Amelia to Millie, Isabella to Billie, Charlotte to Charlie, Elizabeth to Ellie and William to Billy. This is similar to the trend of shortening names and adding an ‘ie’ to the end (seen in names like Elsie, Frankie and Archie) or ending in an ‘o’ Leo, Hugo and Arlo.”
