NSW Deputy Premier Paul Toole and Governor Margaret Beazley test positive for COVID-19

New South Wales Deputy Premier Paul Toole and Governor Margaret Beazley have each tested positive for COVID-19.

Their infections were confirmed on Sunday as the virus continues to sweep through the population, putting increasing pressure on the state’s straining hospital system.

Mr Toole revealed on social media that he and his family had contracted the virus over the last week.

“It’s been a long week in our house, with my oldest daughter getting COVID-19 at the start of the week, followed by my wife and youngest daughter, and then my son,” he wrote on Sunday.

“Today my results have come back and I have tested positive, too.”

Mr Toole said he was experiencing “very minor” symptoms, including a sore throat and a slight temperature, and will stay at home for a few more days.

People in NSW who test positive are allowed to leave isolation seven days after their test if they have no symptoms.

They must also wear a mask and avoid high-risk settings for a further week.

Mr Toole urged people to be cautious over the next few weeks, with the worst of the Omicron outbreak still to come.

“We will continue to see case numbers rise and they are expected to peak towards the end of January,” he said.

“If anyone gets the virus, look after yourself and care for those around you.”

Governor catches COVID

News of the deputy premier’s infection came on the same day Government House Sydney announced NSW Governor Margaret Beazley and her husband Dennis Wilson had tested positive.

“The Governor and her husband are fully vaccinated,” a statement read.

Governor Beazley is “experiencing mild flu-like symptoms” and is “resting at Government House.”

“The Governor’s immediate program has been cancelled in line with advice from NSW Health,” the statement added

Australia’s Governor-General David Hurley and Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg are also currently isolating after returning positive COVID-19 test results.

NSW recorded more than 30,000 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm Saturday.

There were 16 deaths in the same period, the highest number seen in a 24-hour period in the state.
