Alexander Zverev video: World No. 3 explodes at umpire after doubles loss at Mexican Open

One of the world’s top tennis players has been kicked out of a tournament after lashing out at a chair umpire following a doubles match loss.

World No. 3 German Alexander Zverev, who was playing alongside Brazil’s Marcelo Melo, went down 2-6, 6-4, 6-10 against the UK’s Lloyd Glasspool and Finland’s Harri Heliövaara at the Mexican Open on Tuesday night (local time).

Moments after handshakes were exchanged between the players, Zverev headed straight for the umpire before wildly swining his racquet against the chair several times.

The hits narrowly missed the umpire, who was seen pulling his feet back in fear.

He’s then heard yelling at the umpire.

“You f****** destroyed the whole f****** match. The whole f****** match,” he was heard shouting.

As a result, Zverev was was kicked out of the tournament.

“Due to unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of his doubles match on Tuesday night, Alexander Zverev has been withdrawn from the tournament in Acapulco,” organisers said on Twitter.

BBC tennis commentator David Law said Zverev’s actions were “absolutely appalling”.

Earlier in the day Zverev won against the US’s Jenson Brooksby.

Zverev’s exit from the tournament follows several high-profile defaults in recent years.

Novak Djokovic never took part in this year’s Australian Open due to his deportation saga, while he was booted out of the 2020 US Open in the fourth round.

The world No.1 hit a tennis ball into a lineswoman and, following minutes of discussions between officials, was sent packing.

Nick Kyrgios was defaulted from the 2019 Italian Open after an infamous meltdown that included throwing a chair across the court.
