Andreescu back on court after mental break

Bianca Andreescu has made a winning return to the court in her first match of 2022 at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

The 2019 US Open champion is back in action for the first time this season having recently revealed she was considering quitting the sport.

She had not played since October and skipped the Australian Open after suffering the effects of long periods in Covid bubbles and her grandmother suffering a severe bout of the virus..

The 21-year-old Canadian delayed the start of her season and then embarked on a seven-week pre-season training block.

Andreescu looked understandably rusty at first against German Jule Niemeier, but retrieved an early break to take the first set on a tie-break.

The former world number four went on to complete a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory.

Seventh seed Ons Jabeur won a tight encounter with Marketa Vondrousova 4-6 6-2 6-3 in an hour and 40 minutes.
