Skipper charged after fatal boat crash

A skipper has been charged after a fatal boat crash on the NSW South Coast earlier this year.

Three men, including the skipper, were in the six-metre tinnie when it tipped over at the mouth of the Moruya River in February.

NSW Police charged the skipper on Thursday with negligent or reckless navigation causing death, and the 67-year-old is due to face Moruya Local Court in July.

Emergency services were called to Moruya’s North Head on February 9 following reports of a boat capsizing.

People on a nearby breakwall threw lifebuoys to the trio and all were pulled ashore.

However paramedics and a witness were unable to resuscitate one of the men, a 66-year-old.

The skipper was uninjured but taken to Moruya Hospital for testing. Police did not reveal the test results.

The third man, 36, was also uninjured.
